Kelowna Laser VisionAm I A Candidate For Laser Eye Surgery?

  • Your vision must be relatively stable for a period of one to two years. For this reason, people under the age of 18 should not receive laser vision correction.
  • Women who are pregnant or breast feeding should postpone the correction until after this period as hormonal changes will often interfere with the healing process.
  • People with some forms of auto immune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, or systemic illness that could affect wound healing are not good candidates for laser vision correction.
  • Patients who are prone to keloids may develop scarring.
  • A detailed history is taken and each patient is examined thoroughly to find any other factors that could decrease your chance for an optimal outcome.
  • Those people over the age of 40 must consider the factor of age change on the focusing system in the eye. Usually by 45 the flexibility of the internal lens is reduced enough that individuals need to use reading glasses for near. A common solution is monovision, in which one eye is corrected to full power for distance and the other eye (the non-dominant eye) is corrected to a comfortable reading distance. This option will be discussed in detail with you if you are a candidate for this type of correction.
  • People who have early cataracts or have extreme degrees of nearsightedness or farsightedness may qualify for lens exchange surgery.

The only definitive way to determine if you are an ideal candidate for laser eye surgery is to have a Pre-Operative Eye Exam. Call our Patient Care staff to book your appointment today. During this appointment you will be given a thorough examination, your vision history will be recorded and the procedure will be explained in terms you can understand. Based on this exam, the doctor will be able to advise whether or not you are a good candidate for the procedure. Together with the doctor, you will decide if laser vision correction is right for you.
